MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS HOLDS BILATERAL MEETING WITH HIS COUNTERPART

On 11th June, 2025, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, (MP), held a Bilateral Meeting with his counterpart, H. E. Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of China  at the sidelines of the Ministerial Meeting of Coordinator’s on the Follow-up Actions of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Changsha, Hunan Province of China.

At the meeting, the two leaders recalled with fondness, the longstanding relations between Ghana and China dating back to the 1960s when Dr. Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana and Chairman Mao Zedong of China decided to embrace bilateral relations.

H.E. Yi recalled that Ghana and China upgraded their interactions into Strategic Partnership in 2024, a new chapter to further deepen their relations. He stated that China was ready to explore practical cooperation in various fields, advance China-Africa partnership and enforce the tenets of multilateralism.

He referred to the welcome remarks which were read on behalf of the President of China H.E. Xi Jinping during the opening ceremony of FOCAC, where he announced that China would implement zero-tariff regime for the 53 African countries present at the FOCAC.

On his part, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, (MP), revealed that China is the largest trading partner of Ghana, with trade volumes of up to USD 11 billion and could reach 15 billion with the introduction of the zero-tariff on goods from Ghana. He envisaged deepening cooperation with China in various fields such as infrastructure development, Information Communication Technology and people-to-people engagement. Additionally, he highlighted H.E. President John Dramani Mahama’s vision of industrialising Ghana to create employment for the youth of the country. 

The meeting ended with both parties reaffirming their commitment to deepening and upholding ties of diplomatic relations for the benefit of the two countries.
