His Excellency Kojo Bonsu Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Ghana to the People’s Republic of China.

His Excellency Kojo Bonsu is a distinguished statesman and business leader with a demonstrated history of transformative public service and strategic private sector engagement. His appointment as Ghana’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China reflects a career dedicated to national development, marked by significant achievements in urban governance, economic revitalization, and international business relations.

H.E Kojo Bonsu’s story is one of dedication, hard work, and strategic thinking. His association with Ghana’s political heavyweights began with working behind the scenes for the late Prof. Atta Mills. This relationship paved the way for his collaboration with then-Vice President John Mahama on major projects. When Mahama assumed the presidency, he appointed Bonsu as the Mayor of Kumasi, leveraging their working relationship and trust

Political and Governmental Tenure

Ambassador Bonsu’s public service career is characterized by strategic leadership and impactful execution.

Mayor, Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (2013 – 2016): Appointed by H.E. President John Dramani Mahama, His Excellency oversaw a period of significant urban renewal and infrastructure development. Key deliverables included:

    1. The conception and execution of Rattray Park, Kumasi’s first modern recreational facility.

    2. Securing international financing from Deutsche Bank AG for the redevelopment of the “Kejetia Market”  into a modern commercial hub, subsequently recognized as the largest market in West Africa.

   3. The construction and rehabilitation of key market infrastructure at **Asawase, Tafo, and Atonsu-Agogo.

   4. The renovation and modernization of the historic Kumasi Prempeh Assembly Hall.

His tenure in executive government was preceded by extensive advisory roles, serving the administration of the late President Professor John Evans Atta Mills and subsequently collaborating with then-Vice President John Dramani Mahama on major national initiatives.

III. Corporate and Institutional Leadership

Beyond government, Ambassador Bonsu has held several pivotal roles in corporate and sporting institutions:

1. Ghana Oil Company (GOIL): Served as a Member of the Board of Directors, providing strategic counsel during a comprehensive rebranding exercise that culminated in the company achieving the premier position in retail sales among oil marketing companies in Ghana.

1. National Sports Authority: Held the position of **Board Chairman**, where he spearheaded a fundamental rebranding and organizational restructuring initiative.

2. Private Sector Engagement: Has previously represented major international corporations, including serving as the official representative for **Adidas** in the West African region.

IV. Entrepreneurial and Civic Contributions

His Excellency’s endeavors include founding and leading initiatives in media and event management:

1. Founder and Publisher: Established Agoo Magazine, a publication dedicated to African lifestyle and culture.

2. Event Management: Organized and executed high-profile national events, including the “Ghana As One” gala and a concert featuring international artists such as Musical Youth, Osibisa, and The Whispers.

V. Current Diplomatic Mandate

Despite contesting against President Mahama in the 2023 NDC Flagbearer elections, H.E Bonsu’s competency and business acumen earned him a new role: Ghana’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China. This appointment speaks to President Mahama’s trust in H.E Bonsu’s abilities and his potential to strengthening the bilateral relations between Ghana and China. His mandate focuses on:

1. Facilitating and promoting foreign direct investment into Ghana.

2. Deepening economic and trade cooperation.

3. Fostering robust diplomatic and cultural ties between the two nations.
