A Global Stage for Imagination and Storytelling
On 20 May 2026, the Embassy of the Republic of Ghana joined diplomats, artists, and cultural enthusiasts at the Capital Library in Beijing for the guided tour of “Return to Innocence.”

Organised by the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Beijing, in partnership with the Lifetree Culture Promotion Center, the exhibition formed part of the Biennale of Illustration Bratislava (BIB), one of the world’s most prestigious platforms for illustration and visual storytelling for children and young audiences.
The display brought together award-winning arts and illustrations from fairy tale books created by renowned graphic artists worldwide, celebrating imagination, cultural diversity, and the universal theme of childhood innocence.
Multilateral Participation
The event was hosted by H.E. Milan Lajčiak, Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to China. In his opening remarks, Ambassador Lajčiak noted that the exhibition was designed to reawaken “the child artist in every participant,” inviting guests to reconnect with creativity, simplicity, and wonder.
Representatives from several embassies, cultural centers, and local art institutions attended, making the occasion a multilateral cultural engagement within Beijing’s diplomatic community. The Ghana Embassy’s participation highlighted its commitment to cultural diplomacy and people-to-people exchange.
Ghana’s Creative Contribution on Display
The exhibition presented a curated collection of illustrations from internationally acclaimed fairy tale books and art works. Among them was a contribution from Ghana that highlighted traditional storytelling and visual heritage.
The Ghanaian work placed Ghanaian creativity within a global context, reminding attendees that African narratives and artistry are an integral part of the world’s shared cultural imagination.
The Butterfly Illustration
A highlight of the tour was the hands-on artistic activity, where participants created their own illustrations. The Ghana Embassy contributed a butterfly drawing, symbolizing the innocence of the wilderness and the freedom associated with childhood.
The gesture aligned with the exhibition’s theme of returning to simplicity and untainted imagination, offering a moment of cultural expression that resonated with guests across nationalities.

Cultural Diplomacy in Practice
Beyond the art, the event demonstrated how illustration and storytelling can transcend language barriers and foster mutual understanding.
The inclusion of Ghanaian work in the BIB collection elevated the visibility of Ghana’s artistic talent on an international stage in Beijing. It also provided valuable networking opportunities with other diplomatic missions and Chinese cultural institutions, strengthening the Embassy’s outreach in the cultural sector.
The guided tour of “Return to Innocence” was a successful cultural engagement that reinforced the Embassy of Ghana’s presence in Beijing’s diplomatic and cultural landscape. It showcased Ghana’s contribution to global children’s literature and art, while creating space for multilateral interaction and goodwill.
In a world often defined by formal negotiations, the exhibition was a reminder that creativity, and storytelling remain powerful tools for building bridges between peoples. For Ghana, it was a proud moment to show that its stories, artists, and imagination belong on the world stage.
