As Ghana’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency Kojo Bonsu has demonstrated remarkable dedication and commitment to strengthening the bilateral relationship between Ghana and China. In his first four months in office, Ambassador Bonsu has worked tirelessly to promote economic diplomacy, cultural exchange, and educational cooperation between the two nations, Ghana and China

Assumption of Office

Ambassador Bonsu officially assumed office by presenting his open Letters of Credence to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in Beijing.

He officially took office in Beijing on September 23, 2025, pledging to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties between Ghana and China. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he expressed his determination to excel in his new role, stating, “As I assume office today in Beijing, I am ready to work hard and deliver on my KPIs. I’m committed to strengthening the ties between Ghana and China, while ensuring that my mandate is fulfilled with excellence”.

He held introductory diplomatic meetings with senior officials from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Commerce, and the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT). He also engaged with Embassy staff, reviewing the operational structure and setting new performance targets focused on trade, investment, and cultural diplomacy.

Early Engagements

In his first few weeks, His Excellency engaged with various stakeholders, including Ghanaian students and business leaders in China. On November 1, 2025, he was the special guest of honor at the Beijing Students Union of NUGS (National Union of Ghana Students) Akwaaba night. The event welcomed new Ghanaian students to the Chinese capital and provided a platform for Ambassador Bonsu to emphasize the importance of applying knowledge and skills acquired abroad to Ghana’s development.

Promoting Economic Cooperation and diplomatic relations

Ambassador Bonsu has been actively promoting economic cooperation between Ghana and China. He met with Liberia’s Ambassador Thomas McKinley, Dean of the West African Group of Ambassadors, to discuss regional cooperation and economic integration. The two Ambassadors explored ways to strengthen trade and investment ties between Ghana, China, and other West African countries.

Attracting Investments

One of the Ambassador’s key focus areas has been attracting Chinese investment to Ghana. In November 2025, he visited the headquarters of Build Your Dream (BYD), a leading global manufacturer of electric vehicles and batteries, in Shenzhen, China. The visit resulted in BYD announcing plans to establish an assembly plant in Ghana, which is expected to create hundreds of jobs and stimulate economic growth.

Cultural Diplomacy

Ambassador Bonsu has also been promoting cultural exchange between Ghana and China. In September 2025, he paid a surprise visit to the University for Development Studies (UDS) football team, which had won the 2025 FISU Universities World Football Tournament in Dalian, China. The visit was a morale boost for the team, and Ambassador Bonsu presented a cash donation to the team.

He led Ghana’s delegation to the China International Agricultural Trade Fair in Changsha, securing preliminary agreements for Ghanaian cocoa processors to supply premium chocolate products to Chinese retail chains. He also hosted a Ghana-China Business Forum in Beijing, attracting over 600 Chinese companies interested in mining technology, agro-processing, and green energy.

President John Dramani Mahama’s Official State visit to China

In October 2025, he played a crucial role in coordinating President John Dramani Mahama’s official visit to China. The visit marked a significant milestone in Ghana-China relations, with President Mahama holding bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and participating in the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women, held in Beijing. Ambassador Bonsu’s exemplary coordination and diplomacy earned widespread praise, positioning Ghana as a reliable and attractive partner on the global stage, after the highly successful presidential visit.

Engagement with Ghanaian Students

The Ambassador has been engaging with Ghanaian students in China, urging them to be visionary, innovative, and creative in their pursuit of academic and professional excellence. He was honored with the title “Gen Z President” by the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) in China, recognizing his efforts in supporting and empowering students across various Chinese provinces.

Ambassador Bonsu organised the Ghana Cultural Week at Beijing’s Chaoyang Cultural Center, featuring Ghanaian music, dance, art exhibitions, and culinary showcases. He signed MoUs between the University of Ghana and Tsinghua University, as well as Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and Zhejiang University, focusing on joint research in renewable energy and AI applications in agriculture.

Healthcare Cooperation

The Ambassador’s promotion of healthcare cooperation between Ghana and China is commendable. He attended the Sino-Africa Healthcare Cooperation Forum at the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) in Beijing, highlighting China’s advancements in AI technology as a valuable resource for collaboration. He revealed that Ghana is working closely with China to reset its health sector, particularly through the adoption of artificial intelligence for medical diagnosis and treatment.

In just four months, H.E. Kojo Bonsu has made significant strides in strengthening new export channels and investment talks, enhanced cultural visibility of Ghana in China through high-profile events, expanded educational cooperation with top Chinese universities, and successfully positioned Ghana as a strategic African partner in China’s Belt and Road Initiative, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to fostering bilateral cooperation, promoting national development, and enhancing cultural exchange.
